Every parent has had the experience of spending a weekend organizing their child's room only to have it look exactly like it did before within two weeks. Sometimes within two days. This is usually taken as evidence that kids are naturally messy or incapable of keeping things tidy. Most of the time, though, it's evidence that the organizational system wasn't designed for the kid.
Orderly Nest creates kid's room organization systems that work for children at their developmental stage, taking into account how they play, how they think about their things, and what they can realistically be expected to maintain.
What Kid's Room Organization Looks Like
Children's rooms need organization that accounts for a few key realities. First, kids have a lot of stuff, and it changes constantly. Toys get outgrown. New interests come in. Craft supplies multiply. Books pile up. The system has to be flexible enough to accommodate this.
Second, the storage has to be accessible to the child. Bins stacked on high shelves that a seven-year-old can't reach on their own aren't going to get used. Low, open bins that a child can see into and reach are far more likely to result in toys actually being put away.
Third, the categories need to make sense to the child, not just to the parent. Orderly Nest involves kids in the conversation about where their things should go, which creates ownership over the system and makes kids more likely to maintain it.
The Sorting Process in Kids' Rooms
Before setting up any system, the room gets sorted. This is where Orderly Nest helps families make decisions about what toys, books, clothes, and supplies are still age-appropriate and loved versus what has been outgrown or forgotten. Kids can be involved in this process at age-appropriate levels, which also teaches them about letting go of things that can be donated to other children.
Reducing the volume of items in a child's room often does more for tidiness than any system. When there's less to manage, kids can actually manage it.
Age-Appropriate Organization
What works for a three-year-old and what works for a twelve-year-old are very different. Orderly Nest tailors systems to the child's age and capabilities. Younger children benefit from picture labels, very simple categories (all toys together, all books together), and storage they can access without help. Older children can handle more specific categories and may want more input into how their space is arranged.
Amber and her team also pay attention to how the child uses the room. Is it primarily a sleeping space? A play space? A homework space? A space for art and creativity? The dominant use shapes the layout.
We organize anything in your home: kitchens, pantries, closets, playrooms, garages, storage rooms, home offices, etc. No space is too messy or overwhelming—we’ve seen it all!
We just need you at the start for decluttering decisions, reachable for check-ins along the way, and available at the end to wrap up. If you’re working from home or need to step out briefly, that’s totally fine! We never discard anything without your OK.
Yep! We’re moms. We know how to work around kids.
Not necessarily! We always work with what you already have when possible. If products would make a big difference, we’ll offer suggestions—and you can choose to shop yourself or use our optional Shopping Service.
For a $35 fee, we’ll take care of shopping for all the organizing products you need and handle any returns for you. You’ll just reimburse us for the cost of the items—we always check in with you first to confirm the total before making any purchases.
Every session includes decluttering guidance and hands-on organizing, product recommendations, custom labeling, and donation haul-away. We’ll create systems that actually work for your lifestyle—not just ones that look good in photos.
It depends on the size and complexity of the space. In a 5-hour session, we can usually complete one area (like a pantry, closet, or laundry room). Larger or more cluttered spaces often take multiple sessions.
While we’re not a cleaning service, we always tidy and wipe down surfaces as we organize. You’ll definitely feel a fresh, reset vibe when we’re done!
Never judgmental—truly. We meet every client with compassion and zero shame, no matter what your space looks like. That said, decluttering can feel overwhelming at times, and that’s completely normal. We’re here to guide you through it at your pace, never pressuring you to make a decision you’re not ready for. Our goal is to make the process feel as easy and supportive as possible.
Yes! If you don’t see something we offer, just ask! We can help with move-ins, downsizing a loved one, decluttering after loss, or setting up a craft space. We’re happy to tailor our services to your needs. Just ask—we’ll figure it out together.
Yes! Whether it’s mail, school papers, or office stuff, we create simple, sustainable systems for managing it.
While our main focus is function, we love making spaces look good too! We aren’t designers, but can help with layout, product picks, and light styling. Think practical with a touch of pretty!
